WOW MOM

This year for Mother’s Day, my daughter’s school planned a special event for all the mothers. I was invited for a special Mother’s Day tea party with Erin.

erin-susan-tea-partyIt was my first time wearing a hat to a tea party and celebrating it with a class full of mothers wearing hats of various colors and designs. What fun! I had a great time eating snacks and drinking tea out of a tea cup that Erin had especially chosen for me.

I delighted in seeing my daughter sing and dance in front of me and in receiving the cards she designed for me and coupons for free massages just for Mom!tea-cup-2

However, the thing that touched me most was what she wrote regarding the best thing and the worst thing of being a mom.

This is what she wrote and said in front of the class,

“The best thing about being a mom is spending time with us because she loves us.

The hardest part of being a mom is punishing us because sometimes we do wrong.”

Erin was right. We wish that it could be easier to discipline a child and that being a mom was all about hugs and kisses and everything nice. Unfortunately, this is not true at least not always.tea-cup

There is a quote from W. R. Wallace that says “The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world”.

Most of the time, we feel far from ruling the world. In fact, we may even feel that we are at the end of the food chain with everyone else’s needs in the family superseding ours.

We are expected to be a nurse, a chauffeur, a tutor, a chef, a counsellor and all the time a personal assistant and the maid!

But given a chance to turn back the clock, I would still choose to be a mom even if I need to be:
– a round-the-clock nurse,
– a chauffeur that sits in the parking lot for hours waiting for the party to end
– a tutor that does not get paid
– a chef that gets to cook for everyone and clean up after everybody
– a personal assistant that must always be on call to assist
Or even a maid that doesn’t get a day off!

susan-and-kids2Yes, I will choose to be a mom because a little hug, a little kiss or a spontaneous “I love you Mom” make all the hard work and all the heart breaks worthwhile. Yes I would choose to be a mom because having a child has helped me to understand the heart of my Father and to catch a glimpse of the profound unconditional love that He has for us.

There is a Jewish Proverb that says “God could not be everywhere and therefore He made mothers.”

Mothers, you are truly an extension of God’s love and grace in your children’s lives.

I want to salute you here at WOW31 and to let you know that God appreciates you and I believe this is what He will say to you “Thank you for standing in for me!”

Finally, this is a poem recited by Erin’s teacher during the tea party to end the day and it touched me deeply. I would like to share this with all the mothers at WOW31 and believe you will be blessed too!

Here goes:

A Newborn’s Conversation with God

A baby asked God, “They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?”

God said, “Your angel will be waiting for you and will take care of you.”

The child further inquired, “But tell me, here in heaven I don’t have to do anything but sing and smile to be happy.”

God said, “Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you. And you will feel your angel’s love and be very happy.”

Again the child asked, “And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I don’t know the language?”

God said, “Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak.”

“And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?”

God said, “Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray.”

“Who will protect me?”

God said, “Your angel will defend you even if it means risking its life.”

“But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore.”

God said, “Your angel will always talk to you about Me and will teach you the way to come back to Me, even though I will always be next to you.”

At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from Earth could be heard and the child hurriedly asked, “God, if I am to leave now, please tell me my angel’s name.”

God said, “You will simply call her, “Mom.”

WOW MOM! You are truly an angel!

Have a Happy Mother’s Day.

Love,
Susan Dunn
